At B&M Care, we are always looking for ways to improve the quality of care for our residents, especially those living with dementia or other cognitive impairments. That’s why we’re proud to announce the rollout of PainChek® technology in our care homes. After successful trials at Ryeview Manor and Dalton Lodge, we are now introducing this innovative technology at many more homes.
As of May 2026, Painchek is now in use at Ryeview Manor, Dalton Lodge, Montrose, Lakeside, St Anns, Willowthorpe, and Osbourne Court.
What is PainChek®?
PainChek® is the world’s first regulatory-cleared medical device designed to assess pain in individuals who have difficulty communicating, particularly those who are unable to verbally express their discomfort due to cognitive impairments, such as dementia. It’s a smartphone-based app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse facial expressions and identify pain-related micro-facial cues. The app also collects observations from caregivers, looking at factors like movement, body language, voice, and activity levels.
PainChek® doesn’t just detect whether someone is in pain; it helps caregivers determine if the pain is mild, moderate, or severe. This makes it an invaluable tool in quickly assessing and managing pain, ensuring that treatment can begin without delay.
Why is PainChek® So Important?
For many of our residents, especially those living with dementia, expressing pain can be challenging. Cognitive decline often means that individuals are unable to clearly communicate their discomfort, leaving caregivers to rely on behavioural cues or physical signs. However, these can sometimes be subtle or misinterpreted.
PainChek® bridges this gap by providing a more accurate, objective way to assess pain. The technology helps caregivers identify pain earlier and more reliably, allowing for faster intervention and treatment. This not only improves comfort for the resident but also helps prevent further complications such as distress, falls, or unnecessary hospital visits.
How Does PainChek® Help in Our Homes?
Since introducing PainChek® at Ryeview Manor and Dalton Lodge, we’ve seen significant positive changes. Our teams have reported:
- Fewer falls among residents due to earlier pain detection and management.
- Less distress and improved wellbeing as caregivers can act quickly to address pain.
- Fewer injuries and hospital admissions due to proactive pain treatment.
- Improved interactions between residents, with fewer incidents of agitation.
By rolling PainChek® out to Montrose, Lakeside, St Anns, Willowthorpe, and now Osbourne Court, we aim to extend these positive outcomes across more of our care homes, ensuring all residents receive the best possible care.

At B&M Care, we are committed to providing exceptional, person-centred care to everyone we look after. PainChek® is just one example of how we are utilising innovative technology to improve the lives of our residents, particularly those with dementia who struggle to verbalise pain. With its ability to quickly and accurately assess pain, we can ensure that our residents remain comfortable, safe, and well-cared for.
