Staff Training

From the initial interview through to our industry-envied training programme and ongoing support & development, our guiding principles are what defines B&M Care staff. And in line with plans for future growth, B&M Care is dedicated to perfecting its level of care practice through a robust talent acquisition strategy, fostering the highest standards of person-centred practice, and above all, multi-faceted training and development.

Each member of care staff that is new to B&M Care undertakes a mandatory 12-week induction programme that starts with a week dedicated to learning the theory behind the concept of delivering safe, dignified, and highly-personalised care for an older person living in our care. For the remaining eleven weeks, the programme will work within a framework where theory works alongside practice to develop deeper learning within a care environment.

As part of a commitment to ensuring that all new care staff understand and deliver a whole home approach to person-centred care, 2018 saw B&M Care redevelop and introduce and revised version of the above induction programme: one that is regularly evaluated and updated to reflect up-to-date care practice standards.

B&M Care's Rose Model of Dementia Care

B&M Care’s Rose Model of Dementia Care is a studies-based programme that is taught alongside an individual’s mandatory 12-week induction with the primary aim of enhancing day-to-day care practice. The model fosters the late Tom Kitwood’s idea that a care home setting should look at an individual as a ‘whole person’ (Kitwood, 1997) – and not their physical or cognitive capacity - in line with the programme’s six key principles: 

  • Individuality: working with families to understand a person’s life history to create a holistic care plan that values an individual for their unique qualities, rather than their ability or medical capacity.
  • Empowering: acting in the person’s best interests to encourage an individual’s autonomy, independence, and opportunity to make day-to-day decisions
  • Engagement: learning about an individual’s past to provide bespoke care and engagement that is unique to them.
  • Flourishing: maintaining an individual’s interests to give them an identity and the confidence to retain as much control over their lives as possible.
  • Compassion: impressing dignity, respect and a sense of self-worth on an individual to better support them maintain an enabling lifestyle.
  • Wellbeing: taking into account an individual’s biographical, biological, psychological and social background to better engage them in meaningful occupation.

    Upon completion, and when providing care, a member of staff will be able to foster a highly-personalised approach to delivering a bespoke standard of care that is unique to an individual living in a B&M Care Home

B&M Care's Leadership Pathway

In line with the company’s talent acquisition strategy, 2015 saw B&M Care launch its debut Leadership Pathway: an innovative training programme that accelerates an individual’s knowledge and skill-set to lead a high-performance team.

Throughout the 10-month course, each participant will broaden their business acumen, develop their effectiveness, and master a number of key principles across topics such as leadership, strategy and finance. 

A distinctive feature of the programme is the course’s ‘challenge’: a task-orientated project designed to maximise a participant’s ability by immersing them within a scenario that reflects aspects of the course’s curriculum. Previous challenges have included: running a recruitment event in the local community; delivering a dementia-friendly stage production; and recording an advert for Heart Radio.

Virtual Dementia Tour

In line with a philosophy that looks beyond traditional classroom-based teaching, Second Wind Dreams® Virtual Dementia Tour® is an experiential piece of training that B&M Care uses to compliment both an individual’s 12-week induction and ongoing development.

Launched in the UK in 2016 at B&M Care’s Ashlyns Care Home in Berkhamsted by care training specialists Training 2 Care, the Virtual Dementia Tour® is a ground-breaking, evidence-based experience that builds a greater understanding of dementia. Using a selection of patented sensory tools and instructions based on research carried out by P.K. Beville, M.S. – the founder of Second Wind Dreams® who operates in America as a specialist in geriatrics – the Tour enables care staff to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges those living with a dementia face, and use the experience to provide better person-centred care.

Throughout the year, the Virtual Dementia Tour® (in partnership with Training 2 Care) is made available to families, industry professionals and local communities as part of B&M Care’s ongoing commitment to developing a dementia-friendly community in each of its care home locations.
