Staff Training

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

is the Alzheimer's Society's training programme for Person Centred Dementia Care. As a company we are committed to enabling each member of the care staff to attend this course by the end of 2009. The course covers all the requirements for understanding dementia and person centre care recommended by Skills for Care.

This is a very practical-based course which challenges our values and attitudes. It is thought-provoking and encourages us to look at our residents as unique individuals with all the same emotions and needs as we ourselves have, and should inspire us to think "What would life be like if this was me with dementia?"

My personal experience of the Alzheimer's Society Course "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"

It was enlightening! They taught me to 'step out of my bubble of reality and step into theirs'!  I had always thought that I was supposed to pull residents back into my reality but in fact it is more traumatic to do this. The training explained that, it is my job to step into their world and adjust myself to them, instead of them to me.

I was taught things that have really made my job more worthwhile and enjoyable because it has allowed me to understand the residents and their needs much more. It was explained that we should work as a team with families, doctors, friends and other visitors that come to the home. It is crucial to work well with families because they will know more about the residents life. Families and staff want the same outcome - a comfortable, secure and fulfilling life for their loved one in our care.

I really enjoyed this training and I feel it has helped me further my skills as a carer. It has opened my mind to new techniques and in my opinion it is one of the msot effective and enjoyalbe courses I have experienced in my time as a carer.
